Phone Won't Charge / Charging Problems

A smartphone that will not charge, charges slowly or keeps disconnecting usually has a simple cause. Work through cable, port and power checks to get it charging again.

Overview

Charging problems are frustrating but usually have a simple, fixable cause — a worn cable, a blocked port or a weak power source far more often than a broken battery. This guide works through those causes in order, from the quickest swaps to the signs that mean it is time for a technician.

Symptoms you might see

  • The phone shows it is plugged in but the percentage does not rise.
  • Charging is far slower than it used to be.
  • The charging symbol flickers on and off, or keeps disconnecting.
  • The phone only charges at a certain angle or when the cable is held just so.

Possible causes

  • A frayed or failing charging cable — the most common culprit by far.
  • Lint or debris packed into the charging port.
  • A weak adapter, dead outlet or low-power USB port.
  • Heat causing the phone to pause charging to protect the battery.
  • A worn battery or a damaged port needing service.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

Work through these in order — the earliest steps are the safest and fix the most cases.

  1. Swap the cable and adapter

Cables fail internally long before they look worn. Try a different quality cable and a different wall adapter that you know work. This one step resolves a large share of charging problems immediately.

  2. Clean the charging port

Shine a light into the port and look for packed lint. Gently loosen and remove it with a wooden or plastic pick — never metal, and never while the phone is plugged in. A blocked port stops the cable seating properly.

  3. Use a proper wall outlet

Plug the adapter straight into a known-good wall socket rather than a computer, a power strip you are unsure of, or a low-power port. A weak source charges slowly or not at all.

  4. Let a hot phone cool down

If the phone is warm, it may pause charging to protect the battery. Move it somewhere cool, take it out of a thick case and off direct sunlight, and try again once it is back to room temperature.

  5. Force-restart and retry

A software glitch can stop the phone recognising the charger. Press and hold the power button (or power and volume down) until it restarts, then plug it in again and watch for the charging icon.

  6. Test and decide on service

If a different cable, adapter and outlet still will not charge the phone, and the port is clean, the port or battery may need repair. A qualified technician can test both. Note whether wireless charging works, if your phone supports it, as a clue to a port fault.

Before you go further: back up your device to a cloud backup or a computer whenever possible. Steps that could affect your data are clearly flagged — and for suspected hardware faults, a qualified repair professional is the safest next step.

Prevention tips

  • Use quality cables and adapters and replace frayed ones promptly.
  • Keep the charging port clean and covered from pocket lint.
  • Avoid charging in very hot places or under bedding.
  • Do not yank the cable out by the wire; pull the connector.
  • Charge before the battery gets critically low to reduce strain.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone charge slowly all of a sudden?

Most often the cable or adapter is failing, the port has lint in it, or the power source is weak. Swap the cable and adapter, clean the port and use a proper wall outlet to restore normal speed.

Is it bad to use any charger I find?

Use quality cables and adapters rated for your phone. Cheap, damaged or underpowered chargers can charge slowly and, in poor cases, generate heat. A reputable adapter is a worthwhile investment.

The port feels loose — is that the problem?

A loose feel often means lint is stopping the cable seating, so clean the port first. If it is still loose and charging is unreliable after cleaning and a new cable, the port may need professional repair.
